Re: Best Organic skin care products?
Mon, February 26, 2007 - 12:32 PMI would like to hear more about it too because my skin is so sensitive to certain things.
However, I've used Alba products and now Avalon Organics. Love them! very gentle and don't feel harsh on my skin.
have you tried any organic skin care products? -
-
Re: Best Organic skin care products?
Sat, March 3, 2007 - 9:45 PMYeah, i actually have tried some Avalon Organics products. So far so good. I just wasn't sure what other products, people in the group have tried, or would recommend. Also some of the juice beauty products UIP suggested, and of course the oils......gotta have the oils. LOL!

Re: Best Organic skin care products?
Wed, February 28, 2007 - 7:30 AMI have yet to find one line that I use for everything b/c of the ingredients. I use all chemical free products. As for lotion, I use Avalon almond, for my face at night, I like Burt's Bees Carrot night creme; for my hair I use shampoos by Morocco Method, hair gel I use Blood of the Dragon from Morocco Method. These were chosen after much research. They do cost more but the organic & chemical free benefit is worth it to me. -
-
Re: Best Organic skin care products?
Wed, February 28, 2007 - 12:42 PMYeah I don't think I'd even want to use just an entire line. I like using organic oils as well like jojoba and coconut and kanuka and butters like shea and kokum. I use manuka oil on my face to keep it blemish free. For me certain things in a line or brand are amazing and other things just don't work as well, so they aren't worth it because another brand or line has the something that works better. -

Re: Best Organic skin care products?
Wed, February 28, 2007 - 5:01 PMmy fave pre-packaged products are Dr. Hauschka (sp?) and Weleda. i like what UranusinPisces says about using organic oils - coconut, olive, and jojoba are my faves.

Re: Best Organic skin care products?
Fri, March 2, 2007 - 7:57 AMOne of my favorites is Burts Bees Orange facial cleanser. Its not certified organic persay, but its so natural you could eat it. That is the rule they say..."don't put anything on your skin you wouldn't put in your mouth". Then for daytime I use Burt's Marshmallow Vanishing Cream. Its light, non-greasy and delicious smelling. -

Re: Best Organic skin care products?
Wed, March 14, 2007 - 9:21 PMAlot of the replies here are listing companies that are NOT organic. Burt's Bees and Avalon, Alba etc are NOT organic. A product is only organic if it has the USDA Organic label. Many companies say they are organic when they might have 20-80% organic ingredients. Some companies even state "organic" when they have zero percent organic ingredients! The best thing is for us consumers to educate ourselves, especially since the green revolution is becoming so popular.

Re: Best Organic skin care products?
Thu, March 15, 2007 - 12:12 AMi'm a huuuge product snob...
so here's what i've found... a lot o the really great products are not effecable (sp?)
i really like the line grateful body that's my new latest bestest discovery, specifically the 30+ eye stuff
and i'm diggin my new conditioner which is aubrey huneysuckle rose... check it out
otherwise for cleanser and shampoo i use avalon facial cleansing milk and ylang ylang shampoo
and i make my own body oils with all organic oils and essential oils for scents
for lotion i just got a new one which is by holistic enterprises - MSM lotion face and body
and i like simply divine botanicals - honey i shrunk the pores with kombucha -

Re: Best Organic skin care products?
Thu, March 15, 2007 - 12:22 AMp.s. beware of very uneducated employees staffing the bodycare section
also beware of companies changing their name to xxxxx organics, to appeal to the public and be able to have the word organic on the front of the bottle

Re: Best Organic skin care products?
Thu, March 15, 2007 - 11:46 AMYeah that's why I'm not a fan of Avalon. I don't like the back of their label. I have used Burt and Bees lotion a few times, if I remember it's 90% organic? That may be way too high. It smells and feels nice, but it's also way too expensive for what you get. You can buy a huge can of Organic pure extra virgin coconut oil or a good chunk of mountain rose herb's unrefined shea butter for that price. -

Re: Best Organic skin care products?
Thu, March 15, 2007 - 4:45 PMI thought Avalon had more than one line. Some are organic and some are not. If I'm not mistaken, they do actually have the USDA stamp on the bottle. I need to recheck this.
Good info here. -

Re: Best Organic skin care products?
Thu, March 15, 2007 - 4:53 PMThey do have a line called Avalon Organics. But still some of those products are just 70% organic or so and some of their non-organic ingredients aren't so great. But some are, you just have to read the label. Like some lines will have organic orange juice or something in a product but it'll have sodium lauryl sulfate. So that just makes the product basically pointless for organic shoppers. I find Avalon's line doesn't do much for my skin regardless, but a lot of people like their stuff. -

Re: Best Organic skin care products?
Sat, March 17, 2007 - 3:15 PMNew to the tribe but I agree that you have to be careful with the ingredient panel. I personally love baby Avalon Organics because it doesn't irritate my daughter's sensitive skin. The USDA label is really just a throwback from days when the USDA was actually regulating personal health beauty products. It stopped doing that back in 2004 (?). For those who read labels, you should check out www.ewg.org/reports/skindeep2/index.php
It doesn't have every product on it but most of the common ones like Jason, Burts Bee, Avaolon and so forth but the site gives you all the ingredient information and which ingredients are potential health hazards. I found it useful.

Sat, July 7, 2007 - 6:44 PMMake your own! It's fun, you know exactly what's in it, it's feels so good to use something that you made yourself, and you can tweak recipies to suit your needs. Only problem I've had is blowing out a blender with thicker creams.

Re: Best Organic skin care products?
Tue, July 10, 2007 - 2:23 PMI have always loved Aubrey Organics products because they are 100% non-synthetic and they work well on my sensitive skin....buuuuuuuuut they are not YET 100% organic. plus their products (the ones I use) are rated well on this site
www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/wordsearch.php
and this is the shampoo of theirs I like for its gentleness and simplicity - no need for conditioner either
www.aubrey-organics.com/product1.cfm
I was into Morocco Method shampoo, until it started making me break out on my scalp, but lots of products do that, despite their "naturalness"

Re: Best Organic skin care products?
Sun, September 2, 2007 - 10:02 PMI just posted muy fav list on another tribe so here it is!
After changing out all of my beauty products to organic, I thought I'd reccommend my favorite products that are also paraben, laureth/laurel sulfate free, biodegradable and work really well. I wanted to provide an opinion from a consumer because I had a hard time finding information that wasn't from a retailer. I rated each product up to 5 stars.
Places to find these products: Whole Foods, Sprouts, drugstore.com, Target, CVS and Vitamin City in Long Beach, CA
Skin care and lotions:
***** Avalon Organics Vitamin C renewal face cream
This is great for moisturizing dry skin but doesn't leave a residue. It smells like orange candy. Cost $15-20 at any health food store
***** Avalon Organics Vitamin C hydrating cleansing milk
This works for both my husband's oily-sensitive skin and my dry-sensitive skin. I never wanted to try a milk cleanser before this but I took a chance and I will never use anything else. Even senitive skin cleansers made my face sting but not this stuff! Cost $16 at any health food store.
***** Neutrogena's pore-refining toner.
This in not an organic brand but it doesn't contain any bad chemicals. It does contain glycolic acid which is used in facial peels. It tightens the skin and smells lightly floral. It also costs less per oz. than most of the organic brands but does more for the face than most. I also put it into a spray bottle to get a perfect amount onto a cotton pad and on a rag to clean my make-up brushes everyday. Cost $7 at Target, $8+ drug stores
***** Kiss My Face Aromatherapeutic lotion
This lotion is fragrant with claims of antioxidant power. The thickness is medium--good for the body but not for the hands throughout the day. Try the honeysuckle tangerine and tea tree scents. Cost $8 on sale at Whole Foods, $7 Vitamin City, $9 Sprouts
***** Dessert Essence body creams
These are great for your hands and on dry skin. I highly reccommend the Vanilla Chai and Pumpkin Spice. Cost $8 at any health food store
***** Alba lip gloss
Kiss My Face has a similar lip gloss but isn't nearly as moisturizing. This is comparable to Burt's lip gloss but with a better flavor. Try the passion fruit or pineapple. Cost $3 at any health food store or CVS counters
***** Alba green tea sublock spf 30
This stuff smells fresh and soft on the skin all day. It applies easily and doesn't leave any residues. Works well even on oily skin. Cost $7 at Sprouts
Make-up:
**** Earth's Beauty foundation powder
Use it as base under other foundation powder if your skin is dry or sensitive. Doesn't give maximum coverage like most foundation powders but it's completely organic and was the only non-mica foundation powder I found on the internet or in stores. Includes spf 15. Cost $24 online at Apothena.com
***** Emani foundation powder
It does contain mica but is an organic alternative to i.d. minerals which runs $40 a container. Cost $15 at Vitamin City in Long Beach or other health stores.
Hair:
***** Jason Organics sea kelp shampoo and aloe vera conditioner
These are my favorite. They leave my long hair smelling, looking and feeling amazing. It's frequently on sale at Whole Foods. the aloe conditioner leaves the hair feeling lightweight and clean although it's hard to squeeze out of the bottle Jason also makes a dandruff shampoo and conditioner as well but with all the choices and smells, you'll want to pick a more fragrant selection. The apricot is good for damaged/dry hair. Cost $7-10 at any health product store.
***** Nature's Gate shampoos and conditioners
They are very inexpensive and have removed the dimethicone from the product recently. Beware, a little goes a long way with the condtioner. It leaves the hair feeling smooth and smells great. I reccommend the orange patchouli and chamomile sage scents. Cost $7 a bottle at Sprouts, Whole Foods, etc.
***** Lamas revitalizing shampoo and conditioner for
Good for damaged/dry hair or dandruff. It's made with Chinese herbs and can be applied all the way to the scalp. For ends, use a second application of conditioner. Cost $8 at Vitamin City in Long Beach, $12 Sprouts
**** Alba shampoo
This shampoo is very light and strips lots of dirt off your hair. It smells great but is a little drying. Cost $7 Vitamin City
***** Head Organics hair serum
This is a shine/anti-frizz polisher for all hair types. It's mostly chemical but not any chemicals that have been labelled bad. If you don't use a hair polisher, you should. It's for the ends of the hair, even if it's short or straight. This will smooth your ends, create shine and smells deliciously like cherry. This is a must if you color, blow dry, have long or curly hair. Cost $10 at Sprouts
***** Jason texturizing cream
This is for styling your hair just like a pomade. Use it to smooth ends on short hair or to style and blow dry short hair/bangs. You could add some serious volume to long hair if blow dried. The aloe bergamot scent is fresh. Use sparingly, a little goes a long way! I use a quarter of a dime-sized drop to style my bangs. The hold lasts all day, given that you don't sweat too much. Cost $8 CVS or Vitamin City
Soaps and cleaners:
**** Kiss My Face-Obsessively Organic foaming hand soaps
I can't express how delicious the bergamot mix and citrus sented hand soaps are. The only problem with these is the head of the foaming bottle doesn't stay forward and can be hard to press down. I'd love to see refills for these too. Cost $6 Vitamin City
***** Jason citrus scent body wash
Not only is Jason very affordable but they have great selections in scents. The only problem is that most of the handwashes and bodywashes tend to all have a similar jojoba scent. Cost $12 a pump bottle at any health product store
**** Method body washes. They're biodegrable and smell good--a little too good. They have a men's skin care line too but of course I haven't tried it. Cost $6+ at Target
***** Method house cleaners and hand soaps. I reccommend the sweet water and scented soaps, vanilla mix air freshners/candles, almond wood cleaner, peppermint bathroom cleaner, their glass cleaner and any of their dish soaps. I love that they have flushable wipes for the bathroom so you don't have to have germ-infested rags sitting in the trash. Their multi-purpose cleaner for the kitchen isn't as good as a 7th Generation's but it does the job most of the time. Cost $6+ They can easily be found at Target and CVS if you're in a major city.
***** 7th Generation multi-purpose cleaner
I replaced my 409 with this stuff. I even use it to clean pet accidents on carpet. It works almost as well as Zep or 409 on the stove, which is the most important thing since no one wants to scrub crust off a stove. Cost $7 at Whole Foods, Vitamin City or other health food store.
I don't reccommend:
* Alba conditioners:
They are very fragrant but overly drying and leave the hair extra rough and frizzy looking. The shampoos are great at stripping the hair of dirt but the conditioner doesn't replenish the moisture.
** Aubrey Organics sunscreens:
They smell good but are so thick that after rubbing on even a thin layer of sunscreen, the skin has a residue of white on it. The feel remains greasy as well.
** Jason light leave-in conditioner
It smells good but doesn't smooth ends well at all. It can be used to style and blow dry but is too heavy to last all day. It gets a greasy residue after a few hours.
* Any face scrubs containing walnut or apricot seeds.
The shells are too jagged and scratch the skin's surface, causing tons of tiny scars on the skin. The best alternative is Alba's seaweed scrub but it still contains dimethicone so it gets *** stars. If anyone has found a face scrub dense with scrubbers, please reply!

Re: Best Organic skin care products?
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 12:37 AMThe short version:
if you have sensitive oily or sensitive dry skin I really reccommend the Avalon Organics cleansing milk. My husband has combo skin and this is the ONLY thing he can use to wash his face without it breaking out. He even uses it instead of aftershave or benzoide peroxide after shaving to smooth his skin. -

Re: Best Organic skin care products?
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 2:20 AMi have changed my facial cleanser, body wash to pangea, they have a fabulous line for different skin types. i like their lotions too
and i don't use avalon anymore. i'd rather be able to know in plain english what those ingredients are.
and sorry, but natures gate is full of crap, i asked them straight up at greenfest why they still make these products with crap in them... they said, well we have blah blah # of products and it takes a while to change. blah blah blah. as is neutrogena, alba, kiss my face,
READ YOUR LABELS!! we've got to pay attention now.
do not purchase things with parabens in them, or sls, or phenols, or propylene glycol
(this is just info, don't take it personally please)

Re: Best Organic skin care products?
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 2:56 AMjust to clarify, re: nature's gate and others... i don't want to support the large corporations that are still producing products with ANY of the damaging stuff in them... you know? i was so annoyed that nature's gate was handing out samples at greenfest with the caca in 'em.
especially since everyone has changed their names to so and so organics.
and i'm still suspicious of companies, like neutrogena, who will not list their ingredients on their website.
i was looking them up last week for someone, and they're not there.
i don't understand why with the importance, they don't.
and i do appreciate the time you put into your list. i stopped using avalon, because there are some things on their labels that i just don't know what they are... which i'm sure i could research, but geez... what are these things?
(from avalon shampoo label)
sodium lauroyl lactylate, sodium laroyl sarcosinate, sodium cocoyl sarcosinate, cocomidopropyl betaine, disodium cocoamphodiacetate,
and from the cleansing milk: hydrogenated oil? but why?,
and phenoxyethanol is it safe? -

Re: Best Organic skin care products?
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 9:17 PMI was recently scmoozed into buying an extremely expensive face wash from an "organic" store called Origins.
Not that the product is bad but I later found out that Origins as well as Aveda are owned by Estee Lauder.
Sadly these seem to be very good companies that just sold out...(in my opinion)
So...I just recently found a website called Apothena that carries all organic make-up, skincare, soaps...etc.
They list every ingredient in every product they sell. It seems that they carry different lines of smaller companies.
they are strongly against harmful ingredients and best of all...prices are reasonable.

Re: Best Organic skin care products?
Sat, April 5, 2008 - 11:11 AMWeleda is awesome!!! they even use biodynamic ingrediants which is a step up from organics. Aubrey is always very clean. there is a new line called HydraMe very clean lotion and great lip balm. i also really love using 100% pure organic jojoba oil on my skin at night. renews, moisturizes, unclogs pores, cleans... great stuff!!! not all natural companies use clean ingrediants!!!
